Hiring: Deputy Editor

We are looking for a Deputy Editor to play a crucial role in the ongoing production and the development of the journal. This position will support the existing work of the Editor-in-Chief and the Assistant Editor, with special responsibility for supporting early career researchers through the SEA Bioethics Network. The successful candidate will also have a remit to advance the journal’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

The Asian Bioethics Review journal publishes original academic papers on all aspects of bioethics, especially those relevant to Asia. It is run by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Springer Nature and based in the NUS Centre for Biomedical Ethics. We are looking for a Deputy Editor to play a crucial role in the ongoing production and the development of the journal. This will be a part-time position and remote working is envisioned.

The post is made possible because of the Wellcome Southeast Asia Bioethics Network and close working with the Network will be an essential part of the post. The journal is keen to build capacity and strongly encourages applications from candidates in the Southeast Asia (SEA) region, including early career researchers (ECR). The appointment will reflect the journal’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

The successful candidate will liaise closely with the Editor-in-Chief and the Assistant Editor, among other things, to:

  • Support the day-to-day operations of the journal, under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief and Assistant Editor, including via the Editorial Manager system to ensure timely completion of tasks
  • Contribute, with the Editor-in-Chief and Assistant Editor, to the planning of issue content, including potential and agreed special or themed issues
  • Support authors, especially SEA scholars and early career researchers working on SEA bioethics issues, with copy-editing in English
  • Contribute in a leading role to development and implementation of robust Equity, Diversity and Inclusion policies and practices, in liaison with the Editor-in-Chief, Assistant Editor, and Editorial Board
  • Under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief and the Steering Committee of the SEA Bioethics Network, run an honorarium process for writing mentorships for scholars in the SEA region
  • Plan and run capacity building workshops for early career researchers (ECRs) under the auspices of the SEA Bioethics Network, both online and in-person
  • Help plan and manage dedicated journal workshops, conferences, and Young Scholar Award scheme
  • Contribute to the journal’s social media (website, X, LinkedIn, …)

The successful candidate should be educated to at least Master’s degree level and must have excellent written English, organizational skills and attention to detail. Some demonstrable understanding of bioethics is required, and more substantial expertise is strongly preferred. Prior experience of peer review and/or copy-editing work would be an advantage.

Salary is open to negotiation depending on qualifications and experience. This is a part-time position equivalent to one day per week commitment. The post is subject to annual review and for the duration of the Wellcome funding.

Persons interested in applying for this role should send a full CV and covering letter to abr@nus.edu.sg. Closing date is 31 May 2024. Informal inquiries can be directed to the Editor-in-Chief, Professor Graeme Laurie, via email: Graeme.Laurie@ed.ac.uk.
