COVID-19: Assessing Ethical Responses to the Pandemic – CLOSED
This Call for Papers is now CLOSED after the Asian Bioethics Review has received more than 50 submissions on many ethical aspects of the pandemic, of which 23 were accepted for publication.
Moving forward, the journal remains disposed to receive original submissions that are related to COVID-19 and which do not overlap with content already published in the journal. A priority remains to publish accounts concerning the experience of countries in responding to the pandemic, particular in the Asia-Pacific region.
Submissions that cover content already published in the journal and/or provide accounts from countries already featured will not be sent for peer review. In such cases, the Editorial team guarantees a prompt decision to authors.
The Asian Bioethics Review (ABR) seeks brief papers from individuals, agencies or organisations evaluating ethical responses to the COVID-19 pandemic for publication in the Perspectives section of the journal. Asian countries have been at the forefront of tackling the virus, and important lessons can be learned about good ethical practice.
Submissions are invited for papers of between 2,500 and 3,000 words that outline and assess ethical responses to the pandemic.
Questions to be addressed might include:
- In what ways has ethical evaluation been incorporated into a country’s pandemic response?
- What are examples of good ethical practice in dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak?
- What expected or unexpected ethical concerns have arisen during the response and recovery phases?
- In what ways, if at all, have ethical perspectives been changed by the experience of dealing with COVID-19?
- What lessons might be learned for future pandemics?
The word count excludes the title page, abstract, tables, acknowledgements, contributions and references in Chicago Manual Style (with in-text citation, not footnotes). An abstract of up to 120 words shall accompany each submitted paper. Perspective papers will be subject to ABR’s peer review system, with a focus on insightfulness and depth of analysis or reflection.
This is a rapid response call. We guarantee an editorial decision within 30 days after online submission via the Editorial Manager. Successful submissions will be published – with free access – in the next available issue of Asian Bioethics Review.

Dear Evangel Sarwar,
Thank you for your interest in publishing with ABR. There is no specific deadline for the Call for Papers on the ethics of the COVID-19 response. If your submission clears peer review, we will publish it in the next available issue. Our next two issues are scheduled for 15 June and 15 September. We cannot give a guarantee, but f you submit via https://www.editorialmanager.com/tabr/default.aspx this week, we may still be able to publish it in our June issue.
Best regards,

Dear all,
Great to see this special issue. I am interested in publishing. Is there any publishing fee? Thank you

Dear Raluca,
Thank you for this relevant question. ABR follows a hybrid publishing model. As a general rule, if your submission clears peer review, you can choose, either to transfer copyright to us and NOT pay anything, or to pay a publishing fee and keep the copyright. There are two exceptions to this general rule. The first one is when the institution of the corresponding author has a special agreement with our publisher Springer Nature. The second one is a specific exception for papers on COVID-19. Exceptionally, Springer Nature makes these papers freely accessible to everybody (also without a subscription), even if you sign over copyright (and pay nothing). If you would like more details, email me at abr@nus.edu.sg .
